Case Study Summary
Oil and gas companies are looking for ways to trim costs while providing their employees with the technology they need to be productive and innovative. A modern workplace supported by the cloud offers features that enable secure and convenient collaboration within and across teams while reducing IT spend. A leading oil and gas company, focused on supporting the oil pipeline industry, was encumbered by outdated technology and an increasingly complex and expensive licensing model. Accudata Systems was engaged to help modernize the customer’s entire communications and information strategy with Microsoft 365.
Accudata’s customer needed to provide secure yet easy access to data and extend collaboration and productivity tools to ensure users in the office worked closely with users abroad. Most of the customer’s storage was on file shares and an outdated SharePoint environment. The customer wanted to be more flexible and offer more employees remote work options, so they needed to determine how best to connect these users and present the information they need. Specifically, the customer wanted to reduce operational costs while leveraging a platform to deliver worker flexibility and “anytime, anywhere” mobility.
The customer selected Accudata as its partner in this effort and Accudata’s extensive experience working with companies in the oil and gas sector. Accudata’s pre-sales effort follows a proven methodology that includes gathering requirements and designing a solution that adheres to best practices and industry standards. At the same time, Accudata’s client services team was engaged to manage the customer’s licensing and renewal needs.
Accudata focused on the following principles and products to enable a more modernized and mobile workforce for the customer:
- Easier management and security: Migration to Windows 10 provided a secure, up-to-date, and supported platform. Migration from existing on-premises Exchange servers to Exchange Online likewise provided easier access and security. Accudata also implemented Microsoft Intune for mobile device management and BitLocker for device encryption. And, Accudata implemented Azure multi-factor authentication (MFA) and SSL for secure authentication.
- Modern cloud collaboration: Migration of content to SharePoint Online provided easier access to information while minimizing required support of on-premises platforms. Implementation of Microsoft Teams, moving away from Skype for Business, ensured that office and remote workers could stay connected.
- Simplified licensing model: Consolidating platforms with Microsoft 365 means more centralized management of licenses and renewals, which equates to overall cost savings and a higher return on investment.
Today, the oil and gas company is ahead of the pack: With Microsoft 365 in place, they were able to respond more quickly to the COVID-19 crisis and offer work-from-home solutions to their users. They now operate on a modern OS that is supported and can continue to be upgraded and a content management system that is cloud-based, allowing for easy content sharing. The customer enjoys better communication internally and externally via Teams. And, their security posture overall has greatly improved. With Accudata’s help and guidance, the customer has modernized its entire communications and information strategy.
